"Smart" Objects?
Ha, great. Adobe introduced so-called Smart Objects in Photoshop CS3. With these nifty things, you can apply filters to layers, without destroying the underlying data.
Too bad, that exactly those objects destined to be treated smartly aren't: Applying filters to text will inevitably render the text, making it uneditable in the process. Great.
But wait, there's a workaround: start up that behemoth of Illustrator, enter your text, save, and place in Photoshop. Now you can double click to edit your text even after applying all kinds of nifty effects to it.
Now, honestly, Adobe: was that the only way you saw to increase the importance of that bloatware called Illustrator? Because the reason why text can't be a Smart Object is beyond me. And as Adobe goes, such a feature will only, if at all, make it in the next major version of Photoshop, and not in an update of the current version, where it should belong …
